Onions contain antioxidants and other antiflammatory compounds that reduce cholesterol levels hence lowering risk of contracting heart diseases. Quercetin, a flavonoid antioxidant found in onions lowers heart disease risk factors like blood pressure due to its anti-inflammatory properties.
A study in 70 overweight people with high blood pressure found that a dose of 162 mg per day of quercetin rich onions extract significantly reduced systolic blood pressure.

Helps to fight cancer

Eating onions lowers the risk of contracting stomach and colorectal cancer. They have onionin A , a sulfur containing compound that has been shown to decrease tumour development and slow down ovarian and lung cancer.

Controls blood sugar levels

For type 2 diabetes, eating 100g of fresh red onions reduces sugar levels by 40mg/dl. Quercetin ineracts with cells in pancrease, skeletal muscle and illeum to lower blood sugar.

Have antibacterial properties

Onions can fight potentially harmful bacteria such as Eschericia coli, Pseudomonas aeginosa and Bacillus cireus. Onion extracts have also been shown to inhibit growth of Vibrio cholerae, a bacteria that causes cholera. Quercetin is the master here and works by damaging walls of the bacteria.

Basides containing fibres that prevent constipation, onions also have prebiotics which are non-digestible types of fibre that are broken down by beneficial gut bacteria which feeds on them to form short chain fatty acids like acetate, propionate and butyrate.

Antioxidants present in onions protect the body from free radicals. Eliminating free radicals can help to encourage strong immune system.

According to the university of Maryland medical center, the quercetin in onions also reduces allergic reactions by stopping your body from producing histamine which is responsible for allergies.
